Gala Auction
2008 Auction To Raise Funds for Land Acquisition, Restoration
The Nisqually Land Trust will host its Sixteenth Annual Auction & Dinner Gala on Saturday, April 5 from 4 to 9 p.m. at St. Martin’s Worthington Center in Lacey. The auction is the organization’s major fundraising event. Proceeds support the Land Trust’s mission to protect habitat in the Nisqually River watershed.
The live auction, with Auctioneer Larry Schorno, is a fun, fast-paced event, offering items such as fine Native American and Pacific Northwest art, great vacation getaways, landscaping materials and sports equipment. The silent auction features a host of items from plants to pottery and more.
The Land Trust recently completed one of last year’s auction goals—the purchase of the historic 142-acre Allen Estate in Ashford, near the main entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. The deal successfully protects towering old-growth Douglas fir trees that line one-half mile of Highway 706, and important habitat for spotted owls, marbled murrelets, and other threatened species.
Funds raised last year also helped the Land Trust acquire the 29-acre Elledge Ranch on the Nisqually River in Yelm. The Land Trust owns 141acres and 1.5 miles of salmon-producing Nisqually River shoreline in Yelm and is exploring the possibility of a public trail system at the site.
“Our goals for the coming year are even more challenging,” says Kane. “We want to protect more than 1,000 acres of superior wildlife habitat by year’s end and plant thousands of trees and shrubs to restore and enhance habitat.”
Kane says the Land Trust is fortunate to have an opportunity to protect these lands. “If we do not act now, we will lose this precious habitat, possibly forever. Our auction is essential to our success. It’s the foundation for everything we do.”
A highlight of this year’s auction will be the presentation of the President’s Award for Partner of the Year to Wilcox Farms Inc.
“For many years, Wilcox Farms Inc. has helped to support the Land Trust’s activities,” says Nisqually Land Trust President George Walter. “In December 2007, this support included a land donation worth $64,000, which made it possible for us to protect 11 richly forested acres of Nisqually River shoreline southeast of Yelm. In addition, in 2007 Wilcox Farms became the first farm in the Nisqually watershed certified as ‘Salmon Safe.’”
