Beautiful stands of mature forest line the Nisqually River at its confluence with Powell Creek, site of the largest floodplain wetland on the mainstem river. The Land Trust's Powell Creek Complex comprises 380 acres at the confluence and is home to abundant wildlife, including elk, cougar, four species of salmon, and many species of waterfowl.
Our Powell Creek Complex is strategically located among conservation properties owned by several governmental agencies. Combined, these lands form a continuous block of protected wildlife habitat, including a seven-mile section of the Nisqually River that is now permanently protected on both banks.
The Land Trust is conducting a major restoration at Powell Creek that includes removal of three culverts that hinder salmon migration and the restoration of critical spawning and rearing habitat for Chinook, chum, and coho salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat trout. Our restoration plan also includes replanting and enhancement of habitat for northern spotted owls.
